Synopsis: A Tokyo toilet cleaner finds beauty and meaning in daily routines.
Wim Wenders' PERFECT DAYS was Japan's 2023 submission for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards —the first ever film by a non-Japanese director to be given the honor. PERFECT DAYS observes the life of a Tokyo toilet cleaner (Kōji Yakusho; Shall We Dance?, Cure) over the course of one week. We watch as the small dramas of daily life unfold against a spectacular soundtrack of 60s and 70s music. The film challenges traditional notions of success, and pushes its audience to reflect on what makes a good life. Wenders has long been an admirer of the director Yasujirō Ozu (check out TOKYO-GA, 1985), and his influence has never shown more clearly than in this film.
About the venue: This screening is being held in an historic church that has been restored by Illume to serve as a hub for connection and community.
