Synopsis: A Tokyo toilet cleaner finds beauty and meaning in small daily routines.
PERFECT DAYS (2023), directed by Wim Wenders, was the first film by a non-Japanese filmmaker to be selected as Japan’s submission for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards—and it’s not hard to see why. Starring the brilliant Kōji Yakusho (Shall We Dance?, Cure), the film feels closer in spirit to an Ozu classic than anything contemporary. Over the course of one week, we observe the quiet, structured life of a Tokyo toilet cleaner who finds beauty and meaning in small daily rituals. Quiet dramas unfold against a stunning diegetic soundtrack of 1960s and 70s music. With minimal plot and sparse dialogue, PERFECT DAYS challenges us to reflect on what makes a well-lived life.
About the venue: This screening is being held in an historic church that has been restored by Illume to serve as a hub for connection and community. A smorgasbord of delicious treats will be available for purchase: popcorn for traditionalists, coffee and tea served in fine china for the high-society folks, and pastries, vanilla ice cream, root beer floats and cold brew floats for everyone. :)
