Satyajit Ray’s PATHER PANCHALI (1955) follows the life of Apu, a child growing up in rural Bengal in the early 20th century. Shot on location with mostly nonprofessional actors, the film features gorgeous cinematography by Subrata Mitra, who had previously never used a movie camera. Through Apu’s eyes, we experience the rhythms and changes of family life, set to a beautiful score by sitar master Ravi Shankar.
