Vertical sharding is an appealing strategy for those managing massive scale Postgres monoliths. What was once a single point of failure becomes a fleet of independent, lower volume databases. But managing a large heterogeneous fleet comes with its own set of challenges. In this talk we will discuss the motivation, concepts, and pitfalls of binpacking, an architectural pattern deployed at Brex to reduce the toil and infrastructure costs of managing hundreds of Postgres databases.
