Benchmarking PostgreSQL-Compatible DBs with HammerDB ...plus: Supabase Hackathon

Details
In this session, we will explore the ins and outs of benchmarking performance on PostgreSQL-compatible databases using HammerDB, a leading open-source benchmarking tool. You’ll gain practical insights into setting up and running benchmarks, interpreting performance metrics, and optimizing your database environment based on test results. We’ll cover key considerations such as workload generation, testing scenarios, and best practices for ensuring accurate and reliable results. Whether you're a DBA, developer, or systems engineer, this session will equip you with the knowledge to effectively evaluate and enhance the performance of your PostgreSQL-compatible databases.
Last-minute announcement (Dec 3) - it's short notice, but we are combining this event with a Supabase launch-week mini hackathon! Adam Bowker, a Seattle hacker and Postgres user, is going to host a supabase+hammerdb hackathon at our meetup this Thursday! Supabase is Postgres-compatible. After Kellyn finishes teaching us HammerDB benchmarking and test methodologies and optimization strategies, we're going to immediately put that learning directly into practice on Supabase.
Bring your own laptop and plan to stay an extra 30-45 minutes for hacking (and some swag). We think you will successfully run a TPC-like benchmark against Supabase with your own laptop before going home. If you don't, then we'll go down in flames together having fun.
Note: we are starting with free-tier EC2 and Supabase services for this HammerDB mini-hackathon.
Pizza is provided, and we also have a user group lending library of books & papers related to PostgreSQL and Databases.
NEW LOCATION: same place as the summer BBQ - the Fred Hutch Steam Plant building. (Entrance on Eastlake Ave) Typically it's not hard to find street parking nearby.
