Distributed Erlang Magic + Kx Systems

Details
This meetup focuses on Scalability and technologies to enable handling large amounts of data: Hadoop, HBase, distributed NoSQL databases, and more!
There's not only a focus on technology, but also everything surrounding it including operations, management, business use cases, and more.
We've had great success in the past, and are growing quickly! Previous guests were from Twitter, LinkedIn, Amazon, Cloudant, Microsoft, 10gen/MongoDB, and more.
This month's guests:
Eric Merritt, Senior Software Engineer at Amazon
Erlang has a strong reputation for both fault tolerance and scalability. That reputation is well earned through nearly 20 years of providing easily scaled systems with very high up time. This reputation has very little to do with Erlang, the language, and everything to do with Erlang's Virtual Machine, BEAM. In this talk we will dive deeply into BEAM and explore the innovative designs and implementation techniques that have allowed such stellar vertical and horizontal scaling. We will talk about the techniques and approaches in way that will make these features more understandable to you in your Erlang systems and allow you to apply similar approaches to your non-Erlang systems.
Eric is a veteran engineer, author, entrepreneur and public speaker. He is expert in the architecture, development and deployment of large-scale distributed systems on heterogeneous hardware, and the languages and platforms required to support them. His experience spans from vertical scaled manufacturing and billing systems on IBM Mainframe and midrange hardware for companies like Sysco, Inc, to distributed build systems and massive fleet deployment tools on large fleets of beige boxes for companies like Amazon.com, and high-frequency trading and financial exchange systems on custom hardware for leading private brokerages.
Fintan Quill, Kx Systems
An expert in developing database analytic systems, Fintan is responsible for Kx Systems sales engineering globally. Fintan joined Kx in 2012 after having worked extensively with quantitative teams at a variety of Wall Street investment banks, hedge funds, and trading shops building high-performance Big Data applications.
In this session of SeaScale you will learn how to use a relational, time-series and columnar database, kdb+, as well as a tightly integrated query language, q, capable of doing aggregations and consolidations on billions of streaming, real time and historical data records.
Our format is flexible: We usually have 2 speakers who talk for ~30 minutes each and then do Q+A plus discussion (about 45 minutes each talk) finish by 8:45.
There'll be beer afterwards, of course!
Meetup Location:
