Liberty Mutual is a Fortune 100 company with offices around the world including in Seattle, where its Safeco origins are still strong. As a top global property and casualty insurer, Liberty uses data science throughout its business. This panel presentation will highlight various uses of data science, the variety of career channels for data scientists, and evolving perspectives on ML and DS as seen through the lens of our 5 panelists as they reflect on working in the insurance industry.

Speaker Bios:

Caitlin Hendricks
After graduating from Santa Clara University with degrees in Mathematics and Finance, Caitlin has spent her entire eight-year career at Liberty Mutual. She started in the actuarial rotation program where she worked in reserve modeling, claims analytics, and state filings support. She also spent two years consulting with our management team in Chile to help improve profitability using data analysis. Caitlin is an accredited Actuary with her ACAS designation, but over the past year and a half has move more firmly into the data science world and now manages a team of 5 data scientists and actuarial students. Her current work revolves around developing pricing models for Liberty’s Property and Specialty Programs.

Amanda Hutter
Amanda joined Liberty Mutual in 2016 after graduating from Tufts University with a double major in Applied Mathematics & Quantitative Economics. She rotated through many departments in the company as part of the Analyst Development Program and placed out of the program into a Claims Analytics team. Her interest in Data Science led her to join the Claims Data Science team in late 2018, where she owns model monitoring for a suite of predictive models that help to get the right claim, to the right person, at the right time. She will be starting a new role as a data scientist in the Product Design & Modeling group.

Danika Guiley
Danika joined Liberty Mutual in 2017 through the Analyst Development Program where she rotated on a few different data science teams, gaining exposure in Product and Distribution. After the program, she joined the Distribution Data Science team where she worked predominantly as the primary project owner and analyst on a lead-identification program and continued to dabble in a variety of modeling projects. Recently, she joined the Telematics Research team and is working on expanding and creating new usage-based insurance products. She worked in Seattle following her college graduation and has recently moved fully remote to take advantage of Liberty’s flexible work environment. Danika is completing a masters in Analytics from Georgia Tech.

Zhihao Huang
Zhihao joined Liberty Mutual Insurance in 2019 after graduating from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with a masters in statistics. He started as a data science intern in 2018 and joined full-time in Finance Data Science team afterwards. He is working on payment and billing fraud models and billing retention models that help the company to save multi-million losses. He is also leading the end-to-end machine learning operations within the team.

Susan Fung
Susan graduated with a degree in Cognitive Science from UC Berkeley and completed a PhD and post-doctoral work in Neurobiology at the University of Washington. After realizing she wanted to spend more time on data analysis, she completed the Metis data science bootcamp and joined Liberty Mutual as a Data Scientist in 2018. She currently performs research and analytics and builds pricing models for products geared towards small business owners.

Corinne Moore - Moderator
Corinne graduated with a PhD in Linguistics from Cornell University, moved into Natural Language Processing for several years before moving into software development. She currently manages software development in the document technology domain at Liberty.
