Monthly Meetup: Interactive Node Hardware, Visual Programming, and Chatbots
Details
ORGANIZER ANNOUNCEMENT:
After a long run of great talks and terrible jokes, SeattleJS's laughable/affable captain, Jeff Lembeck, has decided to hand the reins over to new leadership. Let's give a thank you for his hundreds of hours of volunteer work with a small token of appreciation for all he's done. Please contribute toward his collective send off gift (https://www.giftstarter.com/giftstart/Goodbye-and-Thanks-for-the-Fish) so he and his wife can go enjoy a much-deserved night out!

Boom, baby! February's lineup is going to be totally, completely, undeniably, off the heezy. Join us the 2nd Thursday in February at DellEMC for an action-packed lineup featuring chatbots, interactive node hardware, and the future of visual programming. We heard DellEMC's providing some delicious food, too. These RSVPs are going like hot cakes, so you better get your spot now!
Topic 1:: Building Chatbots using JavaScript

Chatbots and conversational agents have become very popular in the recent years and there is a huge research effort to automate conversations in several applications. What are Chatbots? How can it benefit you? How do you write the code for it? These questions will be answered during the session with step by step directions using node.js so you can easily follow along. Come join me and build your first Hello World Chatbot!
Topic 2:: Alt-Ctrl : Scream into this Arduino
by Rachel White

When you think about nodebots, the first thing that pops into your mind is probably cute little robots (as it should be)-- but did you know there's a whole world out there of modules that can allow you to control items through various means of interaction? Accelerometers, capacitive touch, light, sound, and more! Learn about different modules that you may not have used before and see how easily they integrate with an Arduino through wiring diagrams and code examples. Experience live demos of how some of these work, try them out yourself through a little audience participation, and walk away with a new exciting perspective on fun ways you can get creative with your own node hardware projects.
Topic 3: Exploring the Future of Visual Programming
by Jonas Gebhardt

Decades ago, machines forced us to learn text-based programming languages in order to talk to them. It’s time to rethink antiquated programming models.
I will present my side project Combine, a prototype for a browser-based visual programming environment, which makes data more tangible, programming more accessible, and enables rapid prototyping of JS apps, or crazier stuff like turning API endpoints into music or visual art pieces.
I’ll also dive more deeply into the tech of what makes this possible– from new-ish browser tech like SVG/CSS3 to Observables, Web Workers, as well as static typing and much more.
Join me for a wild ride through browser APIs and programming paradigms, from CSS hacks to JS compilers, in search of a new, intuitive programming model that prioritizes people over machines.

Thank you to DellEMC for hosting and providing food and beverages!
If you're interested in presenting at a future Seattle JS meetup, feel free to submit a talk (https://github.com/seattlejs/seattlejs/blob/master/request-to-speak.md).
