Topic 1Apache Cordova, Ionic, TACO, Jasmine, and more
Ryan Salva

First, Ryan Salva is a JavaScript developer, Apache Cordova committer, Visual Studio program manager, CrossFitter, sci-fi connoisseur and whiskey enthusiast. With over a decade of experience in software development, you could exhaust two Scrabble™ bags accounting for all the acronyms and technologies Ryan has influenced, but the important thing to know is this: Ryan is a passionate storyteller with deep insight into market forces, technology, user experience and design. Today, he owns tooling for cross-platform app development at Microsoft. Tomorrow, the world.

You’ve got an app idea and a weekend to code it. This month, we’ll learn what tools, tips and tricks you need to bootstrap an MVP in no time at all using client-side code (HTML, CSS and JS).

We’ll start by getting the dev environment configured. Then we’ll move to the UI and talk about iterating quickly – first in a browser, then in an emulator and finally on a mobile device. Next, we’ll tackle app logic and – GASP! – learn how to use unit testing to make rapid prototyping easy and breezy. Along the way, we’ll talk about a variety of app frameworks and tools you can use in your mobile development workflow including Cordova, Ionic, TACO, Jasmine and more. You’ll learn how to:

• Configure your dev environment for speed

• Iterate on your app’s UI and logic quickly without breaking !@#$

• Make it look good – so good – on iOS and Android

• Debug your code on devices

Topic 2Maker.jsDan Marshall

Dan Marshall is a self-taught programmer who made his first drawing-creation software program at the age of 13. Thirty three years later he’s back to doing that same thing. Dan has been enjoying coding in JavaScript since 1995 and currently works for Microsoft.

Maker.js is a JavaScript library focused on the needs of people who create line drawings for 2D CNC machines. Learn how maker.js uses plain objects and an open recursive schema to represent a drawing which can be reused in others’ drawings. See how Maker.js can eliminate current drawing toolchains and modernize the delivery and creation of customized drawings by leveraging HTML5, Node.js, and NPM.
