December SeattleJS Meetup at Axon

Details

Axon is kind enough to host our last meetup of the year. Let's end the year in style, and get together with your fellow JavaScripters for some inspiring talks!

We've got a great lineup of three speakers this month:

TALK ONE
How can you contribute to Node.js
By Trivikram Kamat (https://twitter.com/trivikram)

In this talk, I plan to explain how Node.js works! We'll go through internals of Node.js core, to understand what makes Node run.

  • We'll go through Node.js HTTP API and write a simple server
  • Using time travel debugging, we'll understand the code flow through Node.js internals when an HTTP server is created.
  • Then we'll go through how Node.js core code is structured, and find some task where we can contribute.
  • And we'll cut a Pull Request with Node core live on stage! :-)

Speaker Bio: Trivikram is a Software Development Engineer and have been working on Node.js for last 2.5 years. He's been contributing to Node.js core (support for HTTP/2) since October 2017 and became a Node.js core collaborator in March 2018.

TALK TWO [Lightning! Talk]
T.V.O.D. - Sharing your favorite shows in the era of "Peak TV"
By Brandon Yu (https://twitter.com/brandonYu)

T.V.O.D. is a full-stack web platform for users to track what television programs they are watching during this era of "Peak TV." Users can mark what shows they consider their favorites, leave comments and ratings for each episode, and receive a schedule of all episodes upcoming and recently aired. They also have the ability to follow other users and receive updates on what their friends are currently watching.

This app was built primarily using React.js and Express.js. It makes heavy use of the TVMaze API. The talk will focus on how the app was created. It was create as a capstone project for Galvanize Web Development Immersive program. It was recently showcased at the Seattle React.js event to a warm reception.

Speaker Bio: After two-and-a-half years of experience in the non-profit sector, Brandon is excited to transition his career to the growing field of tech. Having learned the languages, frameworks, and computer science fundamentals essential to web development, he looks forward to applying his new skillset and exploring the possibilities it will bring!

TALK THREE
All About Apps Script
By Grant Timmerman (https://twitter.com/granttimmerman)

Google Apps Script is a scripting language based on JavaScript that lets you do new and cool things with G Suite products like Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms. There's nothing to install — we give you a code editor right in your browser, and your scripts run on Google's servers. In this session, you will learn how to increase the power of your favorite Google apps — like Calendar, Docs, Drive, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides – with Apps Script, a JavaScript platform in Google Cloud.

WHY it's interesting: Learn how to use JS to automate you're life within Google/G Suite. Apps Script is relatively unknown.
HOW it'll make you better: Apps Script is a different way to build an application. 0 OAuth code, serverless, free. Use it casually to automate your business, or simply learn about the unique language design benefits of Apps Script and apply these benefits in your current tech stack.

Speaker Bio: Grant is a developer platform engineer at Google where he leads open source for G Suite APIs. He loves Node, GitHub, and plays the alto saxophone in his spare time.
