What weโre about
SOA hikes everywhere from cities to mountains to deserts. We go backpacking, biking, and climbing; ski and snowshoe, kayak, sail and swim, and in many other ways celebrate nature and the great outdoors.
While exploring the Pacific Northwest is thrilling and restorative, we care about our delicate environments and promote Leave-No-Trace principles and good trail etiquette.
To better protect ourselves from injuries and other life-threatening conditions, all members should take safety and preparedness seriously, carry the Ten Essentials, and be self reliant.
Check our calendar and join us on an upcoming adventure. We're eager to welcome new friends and hope to meet you in person soon.ย
Your Organizer, Michael Songbird

Tips on preparing for a safe outing:
Before venturing into our state's amazing backcountry check theย Weather Forecast. During winter, spring, and early summer, check theย Avalanche Forecast.
If you're new to Washington state, be advised that Search and Rescue teams are busy year-round assisting lost, injured, and/or ill-equipped backcountry recreationists. You can increase your chances of a safe outing by equipping yourself with (and knowing how to use) theย Ten Essentials. Theย Mountaineersย offer an excellent low-cost hands-on navigation training course which teaches backcountry map and compass use.
Your feedback is important and welcomed!
If you have any questions or comments about our group you're welcome to email the main organizer or post your question or comment on our group'sย Message Board. It is our Members and Organizers who make this group a great one so thank you for making it one of Seattle's best!

๐ฟ Seaweed Harvest Adventure at Lisabeula: A Bounty of Oceanic Delights! ๐
Permission to harvest seaweed:
I have successfully petitioned Vashon Island Board Council to vote in a change in Vashon laws to allow seaweed harvesting.Agreement to appear in Public Media:
Since it's relatively unknown that harvesting seaweed on vashon is allowed, I am looking to reach out to media to publicize more information for the public. This is likely to involve agreeing to release some of our photos of our trip so everyone will need to agree to this before being allowed to join the trip.Season:
We should be in peak season right before seaweed starts to spawn in the summer. This is where we expect it to taste best. As a bonus we are going before any red tide can appear.Seaweed species:
I have confirmed sightings of the following species.- Bull kelp
- Brown algae
- Rockweed
- Gutweed/Ulva
Regulations:
Read here for regulations. Please buy a shellfish/seaweed license.Equipment:
- Shellfish license
- Wader(seaweed is better harvested from sea than on sand)
- Scissors or knife
- Foraging bag
- Gloves
- Waterproof shoes. Prefer waders or rain boots
- Food to share and Cooking equipment for lighthouse quarters
- Clam knife if you plan to eat cockles and butter clams and remove sand before cooking.
- Your host will bring a scale
- Things you plan to bring to airbnb
Accommodations
We are staying at 2 historic light house quarters at point robinson from 5/9-5/11 so 2 nights and can take up to 14 people. I cannot guarantee you will get a comfortable sleeping arrangement or that you won't need to share a large bed. The only way to guarantee you can sleep on your own is to bring a sleeping bag.Quarter A
- 2 Queen beds to be shared by 2 people
- 2 single beds
- 2 roll-a-ways
Quarter B
- 1 Queen beds to be shared by 2 people
- 2 single beds
- 2 roll-a-ways
I am capping this trip to 14 people max who are staying at the lighthouse quarters. I'm not able to accommodate additional people past 14 since the quality of the event will go down. If you want to make your separate trip that is fine but I wouldn't be able to coordinate with you.
Payment
Cost is $150
Make sure payment is for friends/familyRefund
The only way to get a refund is to get a replacement to take your spot.Cooking afterwards:
For those staying at Airbnb, we can cook at airbnb after harvest. If I end up allowing people coming for day trip to join us, you guys should bring your own portable grill and we can use the picnic tables at the park.Communication for carpools and other info:
