Camp Muir Backcountry Skiing
Details
Join us to ski/board up Camp Muir on Mount Rainier. This is one of the most popular ski tours in the Pacific Northwest. The forecast looks like it's going to be sunny, and this tour avoids avalanche terrain.
Distance: 9 miles.
Elevation gain: 4,788 ft.
Estimated time: 7 hours.
Overall difficulty: Intermediate.
Ski/board skills: Intermediate.
Everyone will go to the waitlist by default, and I will add riders as drivers become available. It is your responsibility to check your waitlist status, and to remove yourself from the waitlist if you can no longer attend. The total cap is 12 people. Please answer all RSVP questions so I can get accurate headcounts for each location.
Meeting Details
- Time: 6:00 am.
- Location: Eastgate Park and Ride under the bridge.
- Carpooling fee: recommended fee $35 for up 2 passengers, and $24 for 3+ passengers (round trip).
Avalanche Conditions.
Skinning up to Camp Muir avoids most Avalancy terrain, but nevertheless AIARE and avalanche safety gear are required for this trip. In addition, I'll check the avalanche forecast the day before. If there's a sudden change in the avalanche conditions, the trip might be cancelled or switched to a different location.
What to bring
- Ten Essentials: North Shore Rescue's recommended list.
- Avy gear (beacon, probe, shovel).
- Skis / splitboard.
- Helmet.
- Skins.
- Layered Clothing: Including a waterproof layer; expect lower temperatures at higher elevations.
- Water: At least 2 liters.
- Food and Snacks.
- Two pair of gloves.
- Poles.
