We will meet at the East Gate PNR with the final event location TBD based on the best available place to meet our objectives. We will go outside on the snow in light rain/snow or low viability, but heavy rain or significant storms we will try to pivot to indoor training. Right now I'm leaning towards Summit At Snowqualmie, but I will make the final call on the day.

** Note, this is often a very popular event. You must read and acknowledge the questionnaire before signing up. Dropping out after registration ends (12 hours before the event) will result in your attendance being flagged as a "No Show" which is not looked upon favorably by SOA Organizers. If you must drop because of an emergency, please message me so we can discuss. **

This event will cover the essentials of traveling on glaciers. Topics will include:

  • Using ice axe and crampons on glaciers (arrest practice if time allows)
  • Roping up including team spacing
  • Coiling the rope
  • Moving while on a rope team
  • Placing and passing protection
  • Belaying from above
  • Rescue systems

To attend this event you should understand the fundamentals of ice axe and crampon usage and general snow travel. You should also be proficient with the following knots: figure 8, alpine butterfly, clove hitch, prussik. There are many guides online for how to tie these knots, please practice until you can tie these knots fairly reliably.
Required Equipment:

  • 10 essentials for a long day out, including plenty of water and snacks/lunch
  • Helmet
  • Harness
  • 1 Locking Carabiner (ideally auto locking, but screwgate is also acceptable)

Bring with you if you have:

  • Ice axe
  • Crampons with appropriate boots
  • 3 locking carabiners
  • 2+ non-locking carabiners
  • 2 120cm slings (or 1 sling and 1 cordalette)
  • 2 prussik loops (or 1 prussik and one Tibloc or equivalent)
  • 1 pulley (or progress capture pulley such as a Microtraxion or equivalent)
  • 1 snow picket
  • 1 belay device (tube style or similar)

I have my own personal rope, but some additional ropes would be helpful; if you have a rope to bring you will get priority entrance. Ropes should be 50m+ and be dry treated. Half or twin ropes are ideal, but single ropes are also acceptable. I also have some loaner gear to offer; please message me if you would like to borrow something.
