Jumbo Mountain (moderate pace, advanced skills)
Details
DEPENDENT ON WEATHER AND CONDITIONS, MAY BE RESCHEDULE OR CANCELLED IF CONDITIONS NOT FAVORABLE. Jumbo Mountain is located just southwest of Darrington. The summit view includes Whitehorse, Three Fingers, and other iconic mountains of the north cascades. The road to the trailhead from Darrington is expected to be rough and brushy, so expect there could be some vegetation that brushes your vehicle. For this reason, I am willing to drive my own vehicle for this event, but will likely need someone else that can drive.
The distance each way from car to summit is around 4 miles, but gains around 4500 feet of elevation, much of it is off-trail. It entails climbing through potentially heavy and slippery brush and vegetation, loose dirt and rock, blowdown trees, and boulder hopping on steep hillsides and gullies just to get to the snow part. The snow part involves steep gullies and traversing to get to the summit ridge. The final section to the summit involves an exposed, but short class three knife edge ridge. So expect to get a full day of adventure, and be comfortable with these conditions before you sign up. Expect to get dirty and work up a sweat. I would suggest wearing clothes with long sleeves that you don't mind getting dirty and possibly scratched up. Please read the trip reports in the links below to familiarize yourself and get a better understanding of the terrain.
Stats:
Distance: 8+ miles
Elevation gain: 4,600 feet

I'm looking for a team of 3 to 4 capable people to join me. All participants should be comfortable with steep mixed (snow, ice, and rock) terrain, and exposure. Participants should be ok going at a moderate (not fast) pace, and able to pack in team gear as necessary. Also, drivers should be ok with your vehicle getting possible scratching from vegetation for the final section to the trailhead.
The Plan (subject to change):
Saturday
6 AM Meet at the Park and Ride and arrange carpools. I would like to be at the trail by 8 AM at the latest. I can also meet people at Northgate TC if coming from further south in Seattle. Please have your bag fully packed to keep things on schedule.
We should arrive at the summit by early afternoon. Expect to spend a half hour or so enjoying the view, eating, relaxing before we make our way down.
We should arrive at the trailhead by late afternoon, or early evening. Regardless, be prepared to be coming back later if necessary.
What to bring:
Pack, warm clothing layers (expect rain, snow, and wind), hiking or mountaineering boots, crampons, helmet, ice axe, hiking poles, navigation: map, compass, and GPS if you have it, emergency bivy, food and water for the day (2-3 liters minimum), sun protection, headlamp, Sit pad, 10 essentials not already mentioned. Drivers should have directions and NW forest pass or equivalent although it's unlikely we will need one. Passengers should bring money for the driver factoring both fuel and vehicle wear/tear costs. Everyone bring good cheer!
Directions from Darrington:
In Darrington, find Darrington Street in the south blocks of town. Follow this road until it turns to gravel, then follow up until you do the S switchbacks (two turnpins). Continue on the road until it ends at a small parking area.
Approximate google maps location (we will likely drive beyond this location, but google maps doesn't map th actual "trailhead": https://maps.app.goo.gl/SrFzBY5LxKGSej4Z8?g_st=ac
