I proposing a overnighter to Salem, OR to see the total eclipse of the sun. The last one visible in the US was 36 yrs ago and the next one is in 2024. It's happening in the morning, so riding down the day before would be best. Not fully planned just yet but open to suggestions and updating as I piece it all together.

This may explain more: http://www.eclipse2017.org/2017/path_through_the_US.htm

My bother lives in Toutle (2 hrs from Salem) and has a large shop (with a concrete floor though) that will sleep 30 sleeping bags and he has yard space for 10 to 15 tents. Not the closes place to stay but sounds like fun!
He said we could ride to the eclipse and then come retrieve your gear after, on the way home.

Change of plans! I'm riding down to my brother's Sat morning so we can go salmon fishing Sun morning. If all goes as planned all involved will be eating the salmon at a bbq Sun night. If you'd care to ride down Sat with me you can do a Mt St Helens ride Sunday while I'm fishing? And for those who don't care to go on Sat we will have a 2nd group ride down Sun morning to join the ride in progress. You have the option of a tent or my brother's very large covered front porch with sleeping bag and possibly your air mattress, I have a air pump. Feel free to bring/buy whatever you would like for a potluck bbq Sun night.
