Discourse on Chapter 2 Verse 12 of Bhagavad Gita

"If birth is a miracle, death is overlooked. Return from afterlife might be deemed mundane and yet it is an immense opportunity for Self-realization. A knower of Bhagavad Gita can expound each verse in the light of spiritual philosophy that is profound as well as inspiring to an ardent listener. Learn from these words of wisdom that were spoken by His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda while explaining verse 12 from chapter 2 of the Bhagavad Gita.

According to His Holiness, verse 12 marks the formal beginning of the spiritual discourse by Lord Krishna to the quintessential aspirant Arjuna. The verse ushers in Sankhya-yoga teachings to uplift Arjuna, who is dejected in the face of dilemma. While expounding the verse, His Holiness implements a classical teaching approach of interweaving explanations in the light of cardinal philosophies of Sankhya, Yoga and Vedanta.

As the title of the discourse indicates, His Holiness presents a spiritual and philosophical viewpoint on the vision of the Atman (Self of an individual aspirant), all the while keeping the focus on Brahman (Self endowed with a mental prowess of omnipotence and omniscience). Herein the word God is deemed as an imperfect translation of the Sanskrit terms, Brahman or Ishwara that has a more precise definition in the light of spiritual philosophy. During the course of his explanation, His Holiness emphasizes the meaningful purpose of this verse while identifying the Self as the conscious entity. In this nomenclature the self indicates the intellect, whereas the Self implies consciousness.

His Holiness mentions becoming a “spelling bee” in a jovial manner to remind us that earned worldly fame does not usually assimilate the singular vision of the Self. By using the analogy of baggage reclaim, His Holiness illustrates how through our multiple births we keep coming back to pick up where we left off in this worldly drama. Ultimately these returns from afterlife are paused or superseded when we embrace a true vision of the Self and realize our essential immortality amidst mortal decay and death." - Hansavedas
