#BrumPitP | The Role of Social Media in Breastfeeding Promotion and Support

Details
We are really pleased to be introducing our October #BrumPitP speaker: Dr Lisa Orchard from the University of Wolverhampton.
The Role of Social Media in Breastfeeding Promotion and Support
UK breastfeeding rates are amongst the lowest in the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) advocate that babies should be breastfed for up to two years or beyond, but this is rarely seen in practice. Given that breastfeeding is associated with a number of health benefits, there is a strong need to promote breastfeeding and provide practical and emotional support for nursing mothers. In this talk I will consider how social media may play a role in affecting the breastfeeding journey. I will start by considering types of social media content that relate to breastfeeding, and theorise the impact that this may be having on intentions to breastfeed and breastfeeding behaviours. I will then discuss previous research on the topic, and conclude the talk by showcasing areas of good practice.
Talk will start promptly at 6.00pm as we need to vacate the room by 7.20pm. You are welcome to arrive from 5.30pm :-)
