Hi Everyone! I’m looking for 4-5 couples interested in learning tango. The classes will start in January and will be in Gangnam on Saturdays 1:10-2:30 and/or Hongdae Thursdays 7-8:20pm, with 30 minutes of practice time after the classes.
The tuition is super affordable, just aiming to cover costs with the 3 month course only ₩60,000 total because I am aiming to build a tango community in Seoul for English speakers. I’m hoping to train “plants” or dancers who are experienced at tango and understand the basic principles, to be the senior members of the group and help support newbies learning later on. These plants will in perpetuity pay base tuition while new students later will pay 50-80k per month.
Seoul is an amazing dance city with a world renowned tango community. Foreigners travel her just for tango so it would be a shame while all of us are here, not to explore it!
You can sign up alone, but to start the class we will need 4 leaders and 4 followers. Women and men can choose either role, but it’s not easy to change to learning the other role once you start, the skills are quite different and both are difficult. It’s like designing a plane and changing your mind and wanting to fly the plane; it can’t be done overnight so choose carefully!
Typically women have been followers and men have been leaders but it’s not a rigid rule at all. *Some things to consider - there are more followers than leaders at most events by 10-30%, leaders have a higher learning curve at first and followers have steep learning curve later, leading has been described as puzzle solving and multitasking with timing, improvising movements for 2 people, making musical decisions in real time, leading, managing space, while employing technique etc etc. Following has been described as meditation, letting go, maintaining connection, staying balanced in heels, not knowing what you’re going to do next but being ready to do it with elegance, style, comfort, and easy.
There are a few links below where you can see tango in its different forms. It can be formal, grungy, danced socially, performed, be fast, fun, sad, slow, dramatic etc. It’s a versatile dance where everyone can find their vibe.
When watching these clips, please keep in mind, the dances are completely improvised with no basic step as in many other social dances. The leader is deciding while hearing the music, what moves might match it well, and the follower is accommodating in the moment, taking each step while not knowing what the next step will be.
