Details

The Gold Coast SecTalks October event is happening Tuesday, October 7th, 2025, at COHORT Innovation Space, 16 Nexus Way, Southport. As usual, things will kick off at 6pm and end around 8pm.

We are thrilled to be able to showcase some new talent in the industry with 3 Griffith students who will be sharing findings on their chosen research topics.

Elisha Makaza - AI Ethics in Decision-Making: Challenges, Frameworks, and the Road to Responsible Autonomy
This research explores the ethical dimensions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in decision-making, with a particular focus on the challenges, governance frameworks, and the path towards responsible autonomy. As more decisions are becoming autonomous, this shift raises critical ethical questions around accountability, trust, bias and transparency.

Muhammad Iftikhar Khan - Cyber Resilience in Australia’s Energy Sector: Protecting SCADA Systems from Evolving Threats
SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are essential to the operation of Australia’s power infrastructure. However, as these systems become more connected and integrated with modern technologies, they are increasingly vulnerable to sophisticated cyberattacks, particularly during times of geopolitical instability.

Tomohisa Matsuda - Cyber Security for wireless instruments in critical infrastructure
Focusing on the growing adoption of wireless field devices in sectors like mining and utilities in Australia. The talk will explain what these devices are, why they’re used, key wireless standards, and how they differ from traditional Wi-Fi. It will also explore the cyber security risks they pose and strategies for protection and risk management. With relevant experience in the field and a strong interest in the intersection of cyber security and critical infrastructure, Tomohisa aims to raise awareness of this emerging issue as wireless field device adoption continues to grow.

Drinks are provided by our sponsor, Solis, and pizza is provided by Cyber Audit Team. As usual, our venue is sponsored by COHORT.
