Secular Haven: Longmont Book Club, The Anxious Generation, by Jonathan Haidt
Details
Hello friends! Please join us for a discussion of, The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt.
The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt argues that the rise in youth mental illness since 2010 is due to a "great rewiring of childhood," caused by the shift from play-based to phone-based experiences, particularly the introduction of smartphones and social media. Haidt links this to increased anxiety, depression, sleep deprivation, and social isolation, proposing solutions for parents, schools, and governments, including rules like no smartphones before high school and no social media before 16.
Core arguments
The "Great Rewiring": A shift from a "play-based childhood" to a "phone-based childhood" around 2010-2015, driven by smartphones and social media.
Overprotection vs. Underprotection: Adults overprotected children in the real world (structured play) while leaving them unprotected in the virtual world (social media).
Harms of the phone-based childhood: Sleep deprivation, social deprivation, cognitive fragmentation, addiction, and social comparison.
Gender differences: Social media harms girls more, while boys are withdrawing into virtual worlds.
Proposed solutions (The Four Norms)
No smartphones before high school.
No social media before 16.
Phone-free schools.
More independence, free play, and real-world responsibility for children.
