The American Humanist Association has awarded $100,000 in grants to changemakers across the country to mobilize their communities with service projects as part of the American Empathy Project (AEP) on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

Secular Haven has been awarded an AEP grant for $1,000. We are partnering with HOPE for Longmont to provide much-needed updates and repairs to their center. This project will help serve both their clients and the wonderful staff who work so hard for the unhoused community.

The scope of this project is HUGE. We need anyone and everyone who is ready to help. This project will be divided into teams led by members of our community. If you’re interested in being a team leader, please reach out to Jason or Chantelle. If you are planning on joining us, please let Chantelle and Jason know what it is you’re able and willing to work on. This way, we know who we have coming and can plan ahead.

For example, if we have any professional painters who get discounts on paint, that would be a huge help to spread our budget further. Open to any and all ideas! Electricians, plumbers, mechanics, handy people of all stripes… Bottom line, we are looking for the best, most affordable options to make the biggest impact and provide all labor from the Secular Haven community!

There will be…
Demo
Mold mitigation
Drywall repairs
Moving
Replacing the toilet
Replacing flooring
Bathroom upgrade
Installing new lighting
Building shelving
Installing shelving
Cleaning
Organizing
We will be painting… A lot.

There will be something for everyone to do. We do, however, ask you to keep your kids at home as they are not allowed on site. We will have opportunities for our youngest members to serve the HOPE community through our sandwich-making Sunday socials (coming soon).

Things we need if you have them to spare or allow us to use:

Painting supplies

  • [ ] Rollers
  • [ ] Roller extensions
  • [ ] Paint brushes
  • [ ] Trays
  • [ ] Drop cloths (many)
    Tools
  • [ ] You name it; we could use it
  • [ ] Coordinate with Jason

This national day of action will show that empathy is stronger than cruelty and create a ripple effect of compassion and community care.

Let’s come together and make this a project we can be proud of.
