Miami Secular Humanism Meetup Pages

We are the Miami Dade County Secular Humanists

We think our meetup should be a public place where anyone can find us. Then, if you fit the definition below, if you think as we do, you can see who we are, learn how we operate and join us. We are the first meetup in a new meetup category, Secular Humanism.

We decided on the name Secular Humanist because Let's be absolutely upfront - this is a secular organization. Religious persons who join will not be comfortable. And we will not be comfortable with them. We intend this to be a social organization and want our members to have the same general philosophy. Like a Christian church that is loath to admit Muslims to membership we are loathe to admit those who are not secular humanists.

What Is Secular Humanism?

A Summary for those with a short attention span

We are atheist or agnostic - Our group cares deeply about what is happening in this country. We want to do what we can to teach others about science, evolution, and to help our fellow humans to have a good life - We want to have a good time doing that so we want to socialize with each other at every opportunity. Join us it will be fun. We promise.

This definition is found in the website of the Council for Secular Humanism

Secular Humanism is a term which has come into use in the last thirty years to describe a world view having the following elements and principles:

  • A conviction that dogmas, ideologies and traditions, whether religious, political or social, must be weighed and tested by each individual and not simply accepted on faith.
  • Commitment to the use of critical reason, factual evidence, and scientific methods of inquiry, * * *.

  • "It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence."
"Clifford's Credo" by the 19th Century British mathematician and philosopher William Kingdon Clifford

  • A concern for this life and a commitment to making it meaningful through better understanding of ourselves, our history, our intellectual and artistic achievements, and the outlooks of those who differ from us.
  • A search for viable individual, social and political principles of ethical conduct, judging them on their ability to enhance human well-being and individual responsibility.
  • A conviction that with reason, an open marketplace of ideas, good will, and tolerance, progress can be made in building a better world for ourselves and our children.

If you are a person who has those commitments and holds those views you belong here
