Details
Hello hikers,
Monday's hike, December 8, 2025 will be the Hermit/Slim Shady loop. This is an easy 2.7 mile loop that provides some great views of the red rocks. We'll meet at 8:00 AM at the Yavapai Vista interpretive signboard (if the wind is blowing the wrong way, we'll move the meeting area slightly to the north)
We'll be hiking the loop in the counterclockwise direction because there is one place on the Slim Shady Trail which is quite steep. I believe it safer to climb up rather than climb down this steep spot.
The trailhead parking is the Yavapai Vista parking area. From the "Y" roundabout, drive south on SR 179 4.8 miles to mile marker 308.5 then turn right into the Yavapai Vista parking area. A Red Rock Pass or equivalent is required for parking. There is a toilet at the parking area. We'll be starting at 8:00 AM because the parking lot fills quickly in the morning with the mountain bikers (this area is a favorite of the bikers).
Note: The parking area is accessible only from southbound SR 179.
This is a senior-led hike. If you are looking for a cardio workout, this isn't the hike for you. We'll be hiking at a leisurely pace to enjoy the views.
You are responsible for your safety on the hike.
