Hello hikers,

Our hike on Monday, March 23, 2026 will be the Jim Thompson Trail.

In the 1880's, Jim Thompson constructed a road to access his homestead at Indian Gardens. That road is now the Jim Thompson Trail.

The trail becomes somewhat steep and rocky after 0.4 miles but then becomes less rocky and levels out. There is shade for the first part of the hike but little shade further on.

I plan to hike in about 2 miles and then return to the parking area for about a 4 mile hike. Those who wish to hike further (for example another 3/4 mile to the intersection with the Wilson Canyon Trail) are welcome to do so.

We'll be starting at 7:30 AM to help make sure there is adequate parking at the trailhead and to avoid the rising temperatures Monday morning.

The trailhead parking area is located at the end of a gravel/dirt road in Uptown Sedona. From the "Y" roundabout, drive north on SR 89A about 0.3 mile to the Jordan Road roundabout. Take the third exit onto Jordan Road then drive to the end. Turn left onto West Park Ridge. Drive 0.3 mile then proceed through the paved cul-de-sac, continuing on the dirt road for 0.5 mile to the main parking area (Waypoint {1} on the map). This parking area also serves the Brins Mesa, Cibola and Jordan Trails. There are toilets at the parking area. A Red Rock Pass or equivalent is required for parking.

Note: The dirt road is rough with potholes. A high clearance vehicle is recommended.

This is a senior-led hike. So if you are looking for a cardio workout, this is not the hike for you. You are responsible for your safety on the hike.
