## Read 270-296
Man and dog is about Mann's second family pet dog. Is he mocking, worshipful, playful, or just plain wild about a true subject of a great writer's grandeur and frenzy?
We'll discuss how ecstatic his writing is, if you like dogs this is way better than Clifford in descriptive resonance.
If you're joining in, you'll want to start at the beginning, we're fairly flexible about reading and participation. As long as you have something to say, we welcome it! However, the core members of the group usually try their best to read the best of these great writings.
Mann is the father of modern German writing, though Buddenbrooks is not modernistic the way, "Doctor Faustus" is modern. I once had a professor, Moishe Postone ask, "why are there no authors today like Thomas Mann." I do not believe he belongs only in the past, as a contemporary writer I'm quite inspired by Mann and many of my period pieces, read more than a bit like Mann. As a writer, I greatly appreciate his structure, both harmonious and hegemonic. It's like he's a visionary who turned away from commerce and the market to make a kingdom in his books.
