Topic 1)
Topic: “Inventions of the Century: How airplanes, cars, smartphones, and personal computers changed our world”
Throughout human history, a few inventions have dramatically reshaped the direction of civilization. In the 20th and 21st centuries, inventions such as the airplane, the automobile, the personal computer, and the smartphone became turning points that transformed how people live, travel, work, and communicate. These technologies didn’t just introduce convenience—they fundamentally restructured global society, economies, and even human relationships.
1. The Automobile – A revolution of personal mobility
The automobile changed more than transportation. It changed the rhythm of life. People gained freedom to travel wherever and whenever they wanted. Suburban areas expanded, and cities grew outward.
Global logistics and supply chains developed rapidly.
The auto industry created millions of jobs and became a symbol of industrial power.
However, cars also brought problems: traffic, pollution, carbon emissions, and climate change. Still, the automobile remains one of the most influential inventions in shaping modern life.
2. The Airplane – Making the world smaller
The invention of the airplane turned the planet into a connected global village. Intercontinental travel dropped from months to hours.
International trade and tourism exploded.
Migration and cultural exchange increased dramatically.
Globalization became possible because people and goods could move quickly. Airplanes not only changed travel—they influenced diplomacy, war, migration, and the global economy.
3. The Personal Computer – The foundation of the digital age
The PC opened the door to the information era.
It changed the way people work: writing, designing, programming, office work. It enabled the rise of the internet and information access.
Businesses, governments, and schools were transformed by digital systems. Entire new industries—software, cybersecurity, online services—were born. Without the PC, today’s AI, smartphones, and cloud computing would not exist.
4. The Smartphone – Life in the palm of your hand
The smartphone is one of the most disruptive inventions of the 21st century. Phone, camera, internet, navigation, wallet, music, banking, messaging—everything combined into one device. Social networking became a global phenomenon. Entire economies such as the app market, mobile shopping, delivery platforms, and digital entertainment emerged. Smartphones also changed politics, social movements, and global communication. It dramatically reshaped how humans interact, how we spend time, and how we perceive the world.

Then another member shares their topic, followed by a Q&A session. If no one has a topic, the group leader will choose one to keep the conversation going. There are no restrictions on the topics that can be selected.
