Talks
🎤 How to minimise the environmental impact of your digital service - James Chudley (https://jameschudley.co.uk)
It was encouraging to see GDS adding ‘[Minimise environmental impact]’ to their design principles, but it feels like sustainability is rarely a priority on real world service design projects.
We know we need to prioritise the environment, but given the complexity of services and competing priorities where the hell do you even start?!
In this talk, I'll introduce ‘Decarbonising User Journeys’ - a pragmatic approach I've developed to help you to minimise the environmental impact of your digital services.
You learn how it works, how to do it and how it benefits people, performance, prosperity and the planet.
🗣 About the speaker
James is an independent designer on a mission to reduce the environmental impact of the internet.
He has spent his 27 years career working for agencies, consultancies and companies trying to make things like organisations, services, websites and apps more useful, usable and sustainable.
James co-founded UXBristol, is a regular conference speaker and the author of 'Smashing UX Design’, 'Usability of Web Photos’ and ‘UX Leadership Skills’.
🎤 Stop adding sh*t - How focusing on subtraction leads to better experiences - Erik Aremyr (AND Digital)
Consider this: are you busier than you were three years ago? Do you own more stuff than you used to? Does your calendar tend to fill up with more and more meetings? Don't worry, you're not alone. It turns out, when we’re working to improve things – whether it be our lives, our work or our society, we have a tendency to add stuff.
Through this talk, we'll find out how we're wired to overlook the possibility of subtraction. We’re going to see why that’s a problem for anyone concerned with building digital products and services. Finally, we’re going to consider what we might start doing about this problem.
🗣 About the speaker
Erik is an experience design consultant at AND Digital. For the last 5 years, he's consulted clients across the private and public sector. Almost every time he's joined a new client project, he's had to pose this question: "why are we trying to do so many things when we’re not even getting the basics right in the first place?" This question led Erik to the fascinating psychology of subtraction, and today's talk.
🎤 Designing for Impact in the Social Work Workforce - Laura van Krieken (Hippo)
Laura will share her experience leading a service design project within a central government department, focused on strengthening their role in shaping the children’s social work workforce. Her aim was to better support the recruitment, retention, and good practice of social workers, by first understanding the complex system they operate within.
Laura will share what she learned from bringing policy colleagues together in a digital space - managing diverse expectations, surfacing tensions, and helping to navigate competing priorities.
🗣 About the speaker
Laura has experience working across the private and public sector, and uses her background in product design to help understand how users engage with services.
