What’s this session about?
In this session, Ned Gartside, Sustainable Design Lead at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) will be doing a talk and mini-workshop activity on ‘Designing and delivering more sustainable services: The UK Government perspective’About the session
Digital services have environmental costs, ranging from the carbon associated with the electricity they consume, through to the depletion of resources, local pollution and biodiversity loss coming from the mining and processing of raw materials to manufacture hardware. There can also be social impacts, such as from labour exploitation in the supply chain.
This session will begin with a talk on the work being done in government to prototype new standards and guidance on the design, development and operation of services that are as sustainable as possible.
A mini workshop session will follow the talk, giving attendees the chance to think about what sorts of actions could be applied on a real service they have worked on recently to make it as sustainable as possible!
Attending this session, you will…- Gain a clearer understanding of the range of sustainability impacts of digital services
- Take away a set of practical actions that multi-disciplinary teams can take to reduce negative impacts and make services as resilient and circular as possible
- Have the chance to feedback on some of the materials and guidance being developed in UK gov
