Happy New Year! It's that time again for the 5th annual Raising of the Gourds! The earliest Purple Martin (PUMA) migrants usually arrive in South Florida around mid-January but the last few years they have started showing up in December.
PUMAs need human assistance to thrive. Our adults are becoming better parents each year, and this season we hope we get some more mated pairs.
Meet in the lab at 10am. Before we raise the gourds, you'll enjoy an overview on our Purple Martin Project and learn more by prepping the 12 gourds with nesting material. Everything will be provided.
Then we will walk over to the site, complete the Purple Martin pole and raise the gourds!
Volunteer observers are needed to help keep a lookout for arrivals. Then again once the hatchlings start fledging, we need volunteer observers to make sure we find any early jumpers before a predator does.
