SBG Meetup - Bioinformatics

Details

Hello and welcome to our first meetup in 2019 where we will cover some interesting topics in the field of bioinformatics. Feel free to join us and our guest Vladimir Perovic from Vinca Institute for a vibrant talk on Friday 22nd of March! Please read on for more information about our agenda and talkers.

Agenda:

18:00h - Prediction of protein functions and interactions using machine learning algorithms
Presenter: Vladimir Perovic; Computer Scientist, Research Associate at Vinča Institute

The artificial intelligence and machine learning are expanding its usability on biomedical problems. The sequencing is rapidly advancing and alongside sequence presents universal representation of the proteins. Laboratory for bioinformatics and computational chemistry in Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences focuses on methods for automatic prediction of protein-protein interactions and protein functions related to human diseases, based on sequence encoding and machine learning algorithms. Vladimir will present studies on proteome scale and class specific examples and compare our tools to other state-of-the-art methods.

18:40h - Personalized cancer therapy: Discovery of neoantigen cancer markers in the era of NGS data
Presenter: Vladimir Kovacevic; Bioinformatics Engineer at Seven Bridges

Leveraging neoantigens for guided treatment has become the definition of personalized cancer immunotherapy. Neoantigens trigger host immunity to counter tumor growth and are widely studied given their advantages over non-specific treatments such as chemotherapy. Identifying cell products specific for patient cancer cells can enable detection of specific molecular targets of potential use in drug development. These can later be utilised to help train the patient immune system at recognizing and targeting only cancer cells, while ignoring normal (non-malignant) cells. Seven Bridges has developed a workflow for neoantigen discovery using next-generation sequencing (NGS) data, which was used for TESLA challenge https://www.parkerici.org/research_project/tumor-neoantigen-selection-alliance/
Vladimir will explain the methodology and how the tools are used to obtain neoantigen predictions.

19:20h - Networking, snacks and 🍺

*Talks will be in Serbian
