Have you ever wondered what a medical ultrasound image actually is — as data? In this hands-on workshop, we will open up real clinical ultrasound files in Python, understand how every pixel works, and write code together to process and analyze them.
No medical background required. No prior image processing experience required. If you can run a Python script, you are ready.
What we will build together:
By the end of the session, you will have working Python code that:
- Builds a synthetic ultrasound image from scratch so you understand exactly what each pixel represents
- Loads a real DICOM file from a Philips clinical scanner and reads its metadata (probe type, physical scale, scan dimensions)
- Applies denoising filters and explains why ultrasound needs different treatment than ordinary photos
- Segments structures in the image and measures them automatically
What to bring:
A laptop with a browser. We will use Google Colab — no local installation needed. The notebook and all data will be provided at the start of the session.
Prerequisites:
Basic Python (you know what a variable, a list, and a function are)
No medical imaging experience needed
No machine learning experience needed
Agenda:

About Dr. Yasin Ceran:
Yasin Ceran is passionate about all things data and holds a vast experience in data analysis, mathematical modeling and Apache Spark, and in SQL, Python and R. He is currently an associate professor at KAIST, South Korea, as well as teaching at San Jose State University at the heart of Silicon Valley. Yasin has worked rigorously on an array of data-related projects encompassing data mining, statistics, modeling, and is dedicated to sharing his experience and expertise with learners.
