📌 ABSTRACT:
Cities around the world are tackling complex challenges of accelerated urbanization, climate change, supply-chain management, affordable housing and mass transit; and the pandemic has made these even more severe and urgent. Over the past decade, underground tunneling has emerged as a high-impact affordable technology option for cities to tackle these challenges. Tunneling provides city leaders an opportunity to renew old infrastructure with a technology-driven overlay that eases the movement of people, vehicles, goods, resources and waste. It drives more returns out of existing infrastructure capacity and reduces the cost of building new capacity. While tunneling started out with subway and high-speed rail, it today also includes roadway, supersonic vehicles (e.g. hyper-loop), storm water management, freight operations and even waterways.

Gamuda MMC is a global leader in urban tunneling, who has made this a viable option for city development with ground-breaking (pun-intended) innovation in engineering, data and artificial intelligence. They pioneered variable density tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that made it viable and safe to build tunnels in existing complex urban layouts. They have developed the world's first autonomous tunnel boring machines (A-TBMs) that use sensor data, artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision to make tunneling much more reliable, safe, efficient and affordable.
