African American Museum & Library in Oakland
Details
African American Museum & Library Oakland
Sunday mornings this museum is closed, but we can sketch
all exterior sides without disturbing museum staff or visitors. We will meet in front of the entrance on the side facing Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and we'll meet back there at 12:15 pm to share sketchbooks.
This building opened in 1902 as a Carnegie library. It was
closed for years before its rehab and reopening as the African
American Museum, operated by the Oakland Public Library system.
Other historic building subjects lie in Preservation Park, around the
corner from the African American Museum.
Street parking is free in Oakland on Sunday, but you'll have to bring
water or find a coffee house or restaurant for a bathroom.
Directions: If you're driving from either direction, take 980 to downtown
Oakland and exit at 14th/18th Street (exit 1D coming from the north).
Follow the ramp to the traffic light and then drive back on the 14th Street
overpass. The museum is almost immediately south of the overpass, on the block between Castro Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
BART: You can exit on the City Center side of 12th Street BART and walk
west through City Center or along 14th Street to the museum at 14th &
Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Check bart.gov to find out if bathrooms are open.
