Lake Cunningham Accessible Path with SF Bay Area Rotary Club

Details
Build an Accessible Trail at Lake Cunningham with Rotary!
📅 Join our Rotary Club for a meaningful hands-on volunteer project
We’re teaming up with the City of San Jose (District 8) to help build a small decomposed granite pathway at Lake Cunningham Park to improve accessibility.
🛠️What We're Doing
We’ll be laying down and compacting a decomposed granite (DG) pathway, about 42 inches wide, near the old aerator shed at the southeast corner of the parking lot. This work is being done to make the space more wheelchair-accessible for all visitors.
We'll be:
- Shoveling and transporting decomposed granite
- Raking and leveling the path
- Soaking and compacting the layers
💡What You'll Learn
This is a great opportunity to:
- Learn how decomposed granite pathways are constructed
- Gain hands-on experience with landscaping tools like rakes and compactors
- Make a tangible impact on a local public space
All skill levels are welcome—training will be provided on-site for equipment use and safe procedures.
👷What to Bring
✅ A pair of work gloves and bottled water
✅ The City of San Jose will supply:
- Tools (rakes, compactor, wheelbarrows, hose)
- Materials (decomposed granite)
You should:
- Dress for physical outdoor work (closed-toed shoes, sun protection recommended)
- Bring a reusable water bottle if you'd like to reduce waste
- Be ready to lift, shovel, or rake (we'll find the right role for everyone!)
First-timers: Bring a signed waiver form available at
