- About the Hike: Manker Flats via Baldy Bowl Trail ("Ski Hut Trail"). This is my favorites trail and my promise to bring new hikers to the top of Mt. Baldy.
After the first mile on the paved San Antonio Falls Road, a single-track trail climbs steeply up the west wall of upper San Antonio Canyon to the Sierra Club Ski Hut (2.5 miles), across the base of Baldy Bowl to the south ridge, then steeply ascends the ridge directly to the summit. Much of the section from the bottom of Baldy Bowl to the summit is a glorify use trail (developed more by use than deliberately engineered and built to provide a moderating hiking grade). So it is very steep. The varied scenery and direct route is most satisfying
- Direction: From the new 210 Freeway extension, driving east: Exit Baseline Road in Claremont. Turn left on Baseline. In one block turn right unto Padua Avenue. In 1.7 miles turn right onto Mt. Baldy Road (stop sign). After 7.2 miles you pass the Angles National Forest Mt. Baldy Visitor Center in Mt. Baldy Village. You can get a Forest Adventure Pass here. Continue a few miles up to Maker Flats.
PLEASE BRING: Sturdy shoes / hiking boots, trekking poles if you use them, at least 3 liters of water, snacks or lunch, sunscreen, a hat, layers and your ten essentials.
