Renaissance Epic Fantasy: Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene Book 1 (1590)

Details

Way before C S Lewis got his hands on fantasy Christian allegory, Edmund Spenser wrote his masterpiece The Faerie Queene. We follow multiple knights through faerie land fighting embodiments of sin and heresy.

In book 1, we follow the "Red Cross Knight" on his way to fight a dragon to serve his lady-love Una. Along the way, he is led astray and corrupted by monstrous Error, prideful Lucifera, and the duplicitous witch Duessa.
