Intro:
In 2014, Toyota manufactured about 10 million cars i.e. on an average 30000 cars/day.
Below are the two key strategies part of Kaizen (continuous improvement) that helped Toyota become the number one car maker in the world.
Sakichi Toyoda, the founder of Toyota is considered to be the father of Kaizen.
- "abundant rice fields" and his father was a rice farmer.
Sakichi found the loom that his mother was using was not efficient and wanted to create a loom that is more efficient that would produce some extra income for his family.
In 1924, Sakichi created an automatic loom that was 20 times more productive than other loom in the world at that time.
The reason this loom was very productive was it automatically detected any defects and stopped the production.
In the past, if a thread broke, the loom would still continue to produce defective fabric. Now as the automatic loom would stop when there was a problem; no defective fabric was created. It was no longer required to have one person managing one loom instead have only one person manage multiple looms. Not only quality but also productivity improved.
To know Agile
-manage the process for the things
In the context of software development, Kanban has three elements - visualize the workflow, limit the Work In Progress (WIP), and measure and optimize the flow. We cannot take a road with only three lanes of traffic and throw seven lanes of traffic on it. We still get three that’s what the road can handle, so that’s all we let through.
