120km One Day Bike Ride To The Ancient Watertown Xitang

Xitang is a beautiful watertown which is best known for its picturesque old bridges, the ceilinged corridors by the canal, ancient lanes and well-preserved old houses from hundreds of years ago.

The ride is divided into two parts. For the first 40km, we will be cycling to Sheshan and see the hilltop Catholic Church and the Astronomical Observatory which is on our way to Qingpu District. It becomes more interesting once we get to Qingpu. Biking in the countryside is always more enjoyable with less traffic and more scenery. During the second part of the ride, we will cycle along a big canal which is surrounded by small villages, fishing ponds, duck farms and rice paddies. A plant nursery nearby also makes the area very green.

We will arrive at Xitang at noon and then find a nice riverside restaurant to try some famous local dishes. After a satisfying meal, we will spend sometime wandering around the ancient town before we bike another 15km to Jiashan to take the train back to Shanghai. ( K496 Jiashan Railway Station 15:22 - Shanghai South Railway Station 16:59 )

It is a non-commercial trip. We will pay for our own food and drink, entrance ticket to Xitang ( RMB 50 ) and train ticket ( RMB 21 for hard-sleeper or RMB 12.5 for hard-seat. ) Try to get the hard-sleeper please since we have bikes and need more space on the train . Approximately, RMB 130 for the whole bike ride.

We will meet at the KFC restaurant in Xinzhuang Station, Metro Line 1 at 7:30am.

Things to Bring: A good bike, helmet, cycling gloves, bicycle lights, water, snack, train ticket, ID card/passport for the train ride and cash ( RMB 100-200 )
