What we’re about
My name is Johanna, and I am a qualified UIMLA mountain leader, and a qualified yoga teacher (RYT 200). I founded Shanti Treks to create a hiking experience that brings together what I am passionate about. First, I love being in the mountains and experiencing new routes off the beaten tracks. Second, it is about connecting the body and mind with the nature around me and observing it with all my senses. And third, it is about bringing like-minded people together and forming new bonds.
Shanti is a Sanskrit word and means peace. The courage to create my own hiking business was fuelled during a long break in the Himalayas of India and Nepal. Afterwards, I started the mountain guide training and a degree in South Asian studies and Hindi at Bonn university. Hence, the name goes with the theme of leading people to find peace in the mountains.
I have been living near the Bavarian Alps all my childhood, but it has not been until I moved to London, one of Europe’s biggest cities, that I became passionate about hiking. For the past ten years, I have spent every holiday in the great outdoors all over the world. With Shanti Treks I am excited to start a new chapter of leading people into the mountains and passing on my knowledge, experience and passion about the great outdoors.

What to expect
My dear friend Megan, a passionate and experienced yoga teacher, and I are excited to host our second hiking and yoga retreat at the beautiful Meißner Haus. This charming mountain hut lies at the end of a peaceful valley, beside a gentle river, and serves as our base for stunning day hikes to nearby lakes and alpine peaks. As we explore the wild beauty of the Alps, we pause to fully take in the landscape and connect with nature. Twice a day, Megan leads us through mindful yoga flows and guided meditation, helping us deepen our awareness and connect with our inner selves. Each session is woven into the week’s overarching theme of mindfulness.
In the evenings, we return to the warmth of the hut, where the kind and welcoming team treats us to hearty vegetarian or vegan Austrian dishes—nourishing body and soul after a day in the mountains.

In Innsbruck we stay in double or twin rooms with bathroom in a simple hotel, which is within 5 minutes walking distance to the main station. Meißner Haus is a simple mountain hut, and we stay in shared rooms, yet only sharing within our group. The hut has new shared washing facilities incl. showers, a cosy common room, and a large sun terrace that we share with other hikers. The hut serves a breakfast buffet and a three-course vegetarian or vegan dinner. For lunch it offers a great selection of local Austrian dishes. The hut aims to cater for dietary restrictions; however it is not always possible given its simple facilities and remoteness of its location. If you have any dietary requirements, please communicate them in advance.Programme
Yoga
Before breakfast Megan will teach a Hatha Vinyasa Seasonal Yoga Flow, which is influenced by Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Seasons. During the classes you are guided through a unique sequence of postures which have been specifically prepared to align your energy with the current summer season. Each class has a theme or intention to help you get more out of the session and encourages you to take what you have learnt off the mat. After our hikes or after dinner Megan holds another relaxing yoga classes focused on stretching our tired muscles and turning inwards. The practice is open to anyone and there are always options provided to suit all levels. There is a large yoga shala next to the hut that we use exclusively for our yoga class especially in the mornings and a private sun terrace facing westwards that is gorgeous to practice at in the afternoon or during sunset.Day 1 - Arrival
We meet at the hotel in Innsbruck, where we'll also spend our last night, so extra luggage can be stored at the hotel during the tour. There is pre-tour briefing and discussion of the packing list in the late afternoon and a joined dinner in the city centre in the evening.Day 2 - Meißner Haus (1720 m)
6 km, ↑700 m, ↓50 m, 3 hrs walking time (not including breaks)
We take a bus to the small village of Mühltal from where we start our hike to Meißner Haus. The gravel path winds along a long river valley gently uphill until the hut appears on a wide green meadow. Please note that you will carry your backpack up to the hut yourself, which will weigh about 10 kilograms.Day 3 – Boscheben (2035 m)
2 km, ↑↓ 350 m, 2 hrs
Directly behind Meißner Haus leads a beautiful path through the quiet pine forest up to the Boscheben hut. The cute little hut offers coffee and delicious cakes and comfy sun loungers. If you feel like it, we can continue to the peak of Patscherkofel (2246 m, 1 hr) and join the coffee upon our return.Day 4 – Rest day
Today we rest from hiking and focus solely on our yoga practice. We meet after breakfast in the yoga shala for a long and deep hatha yoga class. The rest of the day is free for you to enjoy the hut’s sun terrace or venture to the nearby river, where it forms into a little lake, for a swim or just to enjoy the surrounding nature. After dinner we come together on the private sun terrace for a relaxing yin yoga class.Day 5 - Blue lake (2235 m)
10 km, ↑↓ 650 m, 4 hrs
This hike starts on a gravel path up the river valley, which soon turns into a narrow hiking path. At the end of the valley we encounter the small blue lakes that invite for swimming. Megan will lead us through a guided meditation, and we have enough time for a snooze in the sun. Afterwards we take the same way back.Day 6 – Descent

Accommodation
The huts are charmingly simple mountain refuges, featuring shared rooms or dormitories that may be shared with other hikers if the group doesn’t fill all beds or the hut is fully booked. Facilities include shared washing areas, with most huts offering showers—sometimes for a small additional fee. Breakfast is served buffet-style with continental options, while dinner is a thoughtfully prepared set three-course meal, often vegetarian, with many huts now offering at least one vegan dish. While the huts strive to accommodate dietary needs, their remote locations and rustic setup can limit options, so please share any special requirements with us in advance.Programme
Day 1 – Rifugio del Corno di Renon (2260 m)
8 km, ↑700 m, ↓0 m, approx. 3 hrs walking
We meet at the train station in Bolzano at 12’clock and take the nearby cable car to Upper Bolzano. After a short bus ride we reach the mountain village of Pemmern, from where we start our hike. The first part takes us through beautiful pine forests on wide paths up to the Rittner Alm. In the summer months, around a thousand cows, calves and horses spend their summertime on this high alpine pasture. After stopping for a refreshment at one of the huts, we hike the last few meters to the simple but rustic refuge of the Rittner Horn (2260 m), where we are rewarded (especially at sunset and sunrise) with a magnificent views of the Dolomite peaks and the mountains of South Tyrol.Day 2: Rifugio Santa Croce di Latzfons (2305m)
12 km, ↑425 m, ↓400 m, approx. 4 hrs walking
On our second day, we walk over the high plateau of the Sarntal Alps, which is botanically incredibly diverse. We cross a few small streams on easy hiking trails and head towards the Jocher Peak. After surrounding it, we get a splendid view of our hut for the night with its famous pilgrimage church. A short walk away lies the crystal-clear mountain lake Cassiano for the brave of us to swim in and just behind an easily reachable peak, Cima San Cassiano (2581 m), with a 360° view of beautiful mountain ranges.Day 3: Descent to Latzfons
8 km, ↓1200 m, approx. 3 hrs walking
The path down to Latzfons is wide and easy to follow, hence we can take our time to have breakfast and slowly start our descent. After a last delicious lunch break in Latzfons, a bus brings us from the mountain village down to Bressano. From here you can take direct trains either north towards Innsbruck (2.5 hrs) and Munich (3.5 hrs) or south towards Bolzano (30 mins) and Verona (2.5 hrs).Note that our hiking days may differ from the described programme due to weather and path conditions or the physical ability of the group.
