What we’re about
We are a social walking club based in Sheffield aimed at people in their 20s and 30s. The group has been around since July 2002 and has been growing steadily ever since – currently we have around 200 members! We are part of the Ramblers, Britain's largest walking charity.
We're always on the lookout for new members, so please book on to a walk or social, or come along to one of our monthly New Members' Nights.
More events and further information about the group is listed on our Web page: https://www.sheffieldwalkinggroup.org.uk/
Being a Ramblers affiliated group we encourage our participants to join the Ramblers Association. This allows you to attend our great weekends away and get other Ramblers benefits. It also helps support the great work that Ramblers do to keep the countryside open to all and to fight for the things that matter most to walkers. You can read more about the work done by Ramblers here.
We have walks of varying lengths every weekend in the Peak District or the South Yorkshire countryside.
We have an active Socials programme ranging from meals out and cinema trips to dancing and pool championships, not to mention a Easter Egg, Pub Hunt and a Christmas Party every year. There's something for everyone!
We organise weekends away to beautiful locations across the UK such as Snowdonia, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. They're a great opportunity to see some of the most picturesque parts of the country and take a break from work and the city for a very reasonable price.
We’re a Ramblers group run by volunteers who we rely on to keep it going. There are lots of ways to get involved, so if you’d like to lead a walk, organise a social or join the committee, we’d love to hear from you!

Make the most of the final Friday evening before the Summer Solstice setting out from Stoney Middleton towards the River Derwent, making a sharp ascent up Froggatt Edge, then following the Edge to the Longshaw Estate and back to Fox House. Hopefully, we will get some lovely views as the sun sets (21:58). Please bring head torches in case of any delay on the walk. A good level of fitness is required to manage the sharper climbs.Public transport or car sharing options:
This is a linear walk which makes use of the 65 bus to Stoney Middleton. The 65 leaves Sheffield interchange at 17:58 and should arrive in Stoney Middleton at 18:43. We will wait for this bus if it is late. The only return bus we are likely to be in time for is the 272 from Fox House heading to Sheffield at 22:59. If you wish to drive home from the walk afterwards, there is the option to park near Fox House and catch the 65 as it passes at approximately 18:20.Be prepared:

Water is scarce in limestone country, with rivers often flowing underground and people traditionally depending on wells. In the White Peak, villages traditionally celebrate the wells by creating what have now become increasingly elaborate pictures out of flowers and other natural materials. Well Dressings are more popular than ever now, with larger villages making several (and stretching "well" to include fountains, water cisterns, and... anywhere) and people in surrounding towns copying the practice. But the best dressings are still made in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales. To make things easier for walkers, nearby villages often display their well dressings at the same time, and in this case we'll be visiting Youlgrave and Over Haddon. The loop includes the lovely little Bradford Dale, and the bigger and also beautiful Lathkill Dale, which is famed for its rare flowers that should be out at the same time. If we're lucky there will be chance to buy an ice cream on the way round, and there's a designated (but cold) swimming spot at the end, so bring your kit if the weather is good.
Public transport or car sharing options:
There is no direct bus to Youlgrave, but the 172 runs from Bakewell. The walk leader can't take responsibility if you take the bus.The football club is usually open as a public car park in well dressing week, but if it isn't the main public car park is on the west side of the village. In that case, we'll meet at All Saints' Church. If you drive, I recommend returning via Tideswell and Litton, which are also hosting well dressings this weekend. Please arrange car shares via the comments on Meetup.
Be prepared:
Please remember to dress appropriately for the time of year. A waterproof is always advised, as well as plenty of food and water. Please bring sun protection if required (sun hat, sunglasses, sun cream etc).
