Full description:
A walk across the central Peak District in the hope of catching the hawthorn (May) blossom at its best. Hawthorn is one of the most spectacular flowering native British trees, and widely used as a hedging plant. Many old field boundaries turn white at this time of year, which is often best seen looking down on the Hope Valley.
From the Yorkshire Bridge inn, we cross the River Derwent and head up Win Hill for a first view across Ladybower Reservoir before dropping between hawthorn trees behind Bamford. Crossing the River Noe at Shatton, we head across Offerton Moor for some views down to the Hope Valley, then along Abney Clough and Bretton Clough before dropping into Eyam, with a range of pubs and cafes while we wait for the bus home.
Public transport or car sharing options:
Outbound: catch the 257 bus from Sheffield Interchange at 10:00.
Return: the 257 runs hourly from Eyam, and the 65 runs once if that route is more convenient.
Heatherdene car park is also a short walk from the walk start and on the 257 bus route, but is usually full. If driving to the start, arrive in plenty of time to find parking space, and arrange car shares via the comment section on Meetup.
Be prepared:
Please remember to dress appropriately for the time of year, with enough layers, sun protection if required, a waterproof, and food and water. Further information on what to bring can be found on our website here: https://www.sheffieldwalkinggroup.org.uk/be-prepared
Sign-up:
Sign-up for this walk opens 5 days before the event. If you sign up and can no longer make it, please be respectful of others and remove yourself from the event so that others can take your place. We request you do this ***NO LATER THAN 6pm*** the night before the walk.
Please note:
Sheffield 20’s and 30’s Walking Group is part of the Ramblers, a registered charity. All of our leaders are volunteers. Everyone is welcome to join us on our walks, there is no need to contact us in advance, and as long as you have a place on our Meetup booking system you can just show up. Non-members can come on up to 3 walks before joining the group. After 3 walks, we require you to sign up as a Ramblers member for insurance purposes. More information about the group can be found at https://www.sheffieldwalkinggroup.org.uk/faqs.
