Full description:
From the end of the road up Howden Reservoir, we walk up the track to the Slippery Stones footbridge and continue a short distance up the footpath beside the river. We climb up a steep hill in Broadhead Clough, then contour round to Crow Stones Edge where we should have a good view over the Derwent valley. Then there's just a little more climb to bring us to the summit of Margery Hill, the highest point in Sheffield and South Yorkshire (except for the marginally higher High Stones a mile south, but I couldn't find a good evening walk to go there). Then we join the Cut Gate path and follow it down Cranberry Clough back to Slippery Stones, and return along the main track to the road.
Please note that will be a fast-paced walk that involves a steep climb on rough terrain. Please bring:
- Good walking boots (essential)
- Some food, as we will try to stop at a suitable point
- A torch, in case we get delayed coming off the hills
Public transport or car sharing options:
This is only accessible by car on weekday evenings. Please arrange lifts on the Meetup group. There is no mobile reception at the start of the walk, so arrive in good time. The meeting point is beside the roundabout at the end of the road.
In hot weather, the road can be very congested with swimmers' cars, which may make the walk much longer. In this case, the walk may be altered or cancelled - look out for messages on the Meetup page.
Be prepared:
Please remember to dress appropriately for the time of year, with enough layers, sun protection if required, a waterproof, and food and water. Further information on what to bring can be found on our website here: https://www.sheffieldwalkinggroup.org.uk/be-prepared
Sign-up:
Sign-up for this walk opens 5 days before the event. If you sign up and can no longer make it, please be respectful of others and remove yourself from the event so that others can take your place. We request you do this ***NO LATER THAN 6pm*** the night before the walk.
Please note:
Sheffield 20’s and 30’s Walking Group is part of the Ramblers, a registered charity. All of our leaders are volunteers. Everyone is welcome to join us on our walks, there is no need to contact us in advance, and as long as you have a place on our Meetup booking system you can just show up. Non-members can come on up to 3 walks before joining the group. After 3 walks, we require you to sign up as a Ramblers member for insurance purposes. More information about the group can be found at https://www.sheffieldwalkinggroup.org.uk/faqs.
