Route: Dovedale and Tissington Trail

Meet at: Narlow Lane Car Park, Thorpe, Ashbourne, DE6 2AT. As an environmentally conscious group, we actively encourage car sharing. Further details of car sharing arrangements from Sheffield, Manchester and elsewhere will appear in the comments section nearer the time.

For the first time with Sheffield Mountaineering…

One of the most popular hikes in the Peak District and justifiably so. Best done in winter to avoid the crowds. This outing features a long pleasant ramble through some of the most picturesque scenery in the White Peak with the contrasting environments of a dramatic steep sided rocky valley and a disused railway line re-purposed as a pleasant hiking trail. Other highlights include an ascent of the small but spectacular hill of Thorpe Cloud, the famous Dovedale Stepping Stones, the giant limestone rock formations of Tissington Spires, Reynard’s Cave, the towering Ilam Rock and the incredible caves of Dovedale Holes.

Difficulty: Adventurous hiking on sometimes rocky terrain.

Experience Required: Some previous hillwalking/hiking experience would be beneficial along with a reasonable level of fitness, sense of adventure and preparation for any weather. The route can get a bit muddy so waterproof walking boots or better still wellies are recommended!

Duration: Approx. 15 km with height gain of approx. 500 metres. Estimated time 5 to 6 hours.

Ordnance Survey Map: White Peak Area OL24 Explorer Map 1:25 000 Scale.

As always, if everybody wants to contribute £2.00 towards our Meet Up site fees and other operating costs that will be great, thanks.
