Peak District walk: Steel Cotton Rail Trail #2 – Hope to Marple (25 mi)
Details
This walk forms part of a three-stage challenge:
• Part 1: Sheffield → Hope (20 miles)
• Part 2: Hope → Marple (25 miles)
• Part 3: Marple → Manchester (16 miles)
Join us for the second stage of the Steel Cotton Rail Trail, a long-distance walking route linking Sheffield and Manchester through the heart of the Peak District.
This second section takes us from Hope to Marple, crossing some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Peak District before descending into the historic mill towns and waterways of the High Peak.
Leaving Hope behind, we'll pass through Edale and climb onto the Pennine Way via Jacob's Ladder, enjoying panoramic views across Kinder Scout and the surrounding moorlands. From there, the route continues through a fascinating mix of upland scenery, quiet countryside, former railway corridors, canal towpaths and historic industrial landscapes as we make our way towards Greater Manchester.
Along the way, we'll experience the dramatic contrast between the wild Peak District hills and the waterways, mills and transport routes that helped shape the region's industrial heritage.
The Steel Cotton Rail Trail celebrates the historic connection between Sheffield's steel industry and Manchester's cotton mills, following the railway corridor that allowed generations of workers to escape the industrial cities and enjoy the countryside.
Whether you're planning to complete the entire Sheffield-to-Manchester journey or simply join us for this stage, you're very welcome.

🌦️ Weather & Clothing
The weather on the hills can be very changeable, windy, and cold, even in summer. Please wear appropriate hiking boots or shoes with good grip to handle muddy and slippery terrain. Avoid flat trainers or jeans.
Dress in layers to adjust to changing conditions: moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and waterproof outer layers are recommended. Don’t forget sun protection like suncream and sunglasses if it’s sunny.

🐇🐢 Pace & Fitness Requirements
This is a challenging long-distance hike and is best suited to regular walkers with a good level of fitness.
The group will aim to maintain a steady pace throughout the day. While everyone is welcome to walk at their own speed, we may not be able to wait for participants who fall significantly behind.
If you are unsure about your fitness for the distance, please consider this before RSVPing.
The good news is that the route follows the Hope Valley railway line and passes several stations, so there are opportunities to shorten the walk and return home by train if needed.

Fit and friendly dogs are very welcome!
Note that farmers are legally entitled to protect their livestock from dogs that are out of control, so please keep dogs on a lead whenever livestock are present.
