Celebrating Charles Darwin
Details
April is the cruellest (Brit.) month, as April 19th marks the 144th
anniversary of the death of Charles Robert Darwin. Join us Sunday, April
12th, at 10:00 a.m. for a celebration of Darwin’s life. (The Zoom link is below.)
We will review how Darwin came to formulate his theory of evolution and his relationship with Alfred Russel Wallace, who independently conceived of the theory. We will then discuss the impact of his theory on science, education, and theology.
We will be joined by Mike Reid, past president of the Washington Area
Secular Humanists and a noted speaker on Darwin and his theory, who will share his thoughts and expertise. Mike also has
promised to share with us some of the models he has that will help
illustrate the evolutionary process.
We are likely to touch upon such topics as Social Darwinism,
Creationism, Irreducible Complexity, and the Scopes Trial (how could we
not). And as a further prompt for discussion, we may consider whether we
have entered a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene, in which survival
of the fittest has had to make way for the survival of the unfittest.
