19:20 UX Debt: Developer Borrow While Users Pay
by Veronika Schwarz
This talk highlights the often-overlooked concept of UX Debt—what happens when development decisions prioritize deadlines or technical solutions over user experience. While technical debt is well-understood, UX Debt remains underexplored, even though it can significantly impact user satisfaction.
We’ll explore how technical debt can inherently lead to UX Debt and why even technically flawless software may still fail to meet user needs when it doesn’t align with actual workflows or expectations. Using insights from a large industry case study, I’ll introduce different types of UX Debt and how they relate to technical debt.
You’ll also learn practical strategies to identify and manage UX Debt, including tools like user surveys and usability tests, and how to extend project assessments beyond technical metrics to focus on the user experience. This talk aims to raise awareness of UX Debt as a key aspect of building products that combine technical excellence with convincing usability.
