If you're thinking, "HEY ELLIE, THIS ISN'T A FRIDAY!", you're correct. But we're doing a Thursday edition since we won't have practice during Pride Weekend or on the 4th of July and frankly I'll miss you guys if we wait that long. After this one, we'll go back to Fridays.
Play soccer with women and nonbinary folks (almost) every Friday at Judkins Park & Playfield
6:00-6:30 - Stretching, chatting, easy warmup games
6:30-7:45 - Scrimmage!! We play on a smaller than standard field and switch off who is in goal. While it's definitely a workout, it's more fun than competitive - we rarely ever keep score and we cheer for everyone.
7:45-8:00 - Cooldown, stretching, chatting
What to bring:
WATER, Sneakers, Clothes you can move in
Don't let lack of supplies stop you from showing up. I bring a ball, pinnies, cones, etc and we actually request folks NOT wear cleats to prevent injuries due to getting stepped on. Depending on weather/season, I also recommend sunglasses, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent. And again, WATER.
Rules:
- Be shit at soccer or bring your "shit-at-soccer" energy
- No dudes! Sorry, guys
- Don't be the reason we have to make a third rule
Inclusivity: We're an intentionally queer group - You absolutely don't have to be queer to attend, but 80%+ of the regulars are queer folks and the founder/host Ellie is an out nonbinary lesbian.
Parking: Super easy!! There is a parking lot and free street parking. It's generally safe, but don't leave any high-ticket items (laptops etc) visible in your car.
Accessibility: We take regular water/rest breaks and folks can sub in/out of games whenever. Most of us are not in shape. Full disclosure: the bathrooms are pretty shitty and I've never seen the water fountain NOT broken. There are benches and paved sidewalks around the park. Street lamps around the park turn on at sunset. I don't own a rattle ball, but I'm happy to use it if you bring it. I bring a small first aid kit and ice packs in case of injuries.
Dogs: This park frequently has off leash dogs running around.
I don't have an official permit/reservation for the field (costs $), so if someone shows up who has it (has never happened) then we have to move.
I pay for a monthly for a meetup subscription and buy all of our supplies/first aid kits out of my own pocket. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS, but if you would like to help offset costs, my venmo is: @ellie-ish
