Staten Island: Wadsworth & Beyond
Details
Join us for a park ranger-led tour of Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, followed by a walk along the FDR Boardwalk and Miller Field New Dorp Lane. Approximately 6 miles. The group will take the S51 bus to the Fort and the SI Rapid Transit (accepts Metro cards) from Miller Field back to the ferry. To walk back to the ferry from Miller Field is 7 miles if you'd like to add an extension on your own.
Kiki B., longtime Shorewalker, licensed tour guide, and Staten Island resident, will meet the group at the S51 bus stop. We'll ride the bus to Fort Wadsworth where we’ll go to the Visitor’s Center and walk through an exhibit about the fort’s history. Restrooms available. The group is scheduled for a 10:30-11:30am private tour (free).
After our tour, we'll walk along a bike lane to reach the FDR Boardwalk at South and Midland beaches and have lunch in a shaded tree area off the boardwalk. We continue to Miller Field where Amelia Earhart practiced before her solo flight across the Atlantic. Time permitting, we’ll walk briefly down and back Cedar Grove Road to show site of erstwhile bungalows and community center, now Sandy-reinforced houses and park.
MEET: at 8:45am in the Ferry Terminal on the Manhattan side. Hike Leader Pam Cress will meet the group on the second floor of the terminal in the area of the restrooms. We'll take the 9am ferry (free). Or meet the group on the Staten Island side at the S51 bus stop ramp B outside the Terminal. For those coming from Brooklyn, take the S53 from 86th Street to the McClean Ave/Lily Pond Ave stop located near Fort Wadsworth and meet us there in the Visitor's Center.
END: From Miller Field, we walk 1 mile to New Dorp Plaza to take the SI Rapid Transit (accepts Metro cards). Train runs approximately every 20 minutes. Option for those who want to walk back to the ferry, about 7 miles.
BRING: water, lunch, snacks. Sunscreen and hat strongly recommended.
HIKE LEADERS: Kiki Black and Pam Cress, pactoday@gmail.com, 917-597-2664 (text only). Please note in comments how you plan to arrive to the Fort.
