We will explore Staten Island’s 57-mile coastline. However, unlike the Shorewalker’s Great Saunter completed in one da. During this fall challenge, we will complete three sections, from the Staten IsIand Ferry to the Conference House area in Tottenville. On this second part, we will start at the New Dorp Staten Island Railway stop and end at the Huguenot Railway station. The Staten Island Railway (SIR) takes us back to the ferry terminal at St. George.
This second section is approximately 11 miles on mostly flat terrain.

MEET: At 8:40 AM outside the bathrooms on the 2nd floor of the Staten Island Ferry terminal in lower Manhattan. Please use the bathrooms in the ferry terminal on the Manhattan side. We will take the ferry leaving Manhattan at 9:00 AM.
In the St. George terminal (on the Staten Island side), we will take the Staten Island Railway to New Dorp, where we will meet the drivers at 10:00 AM.

The fare for the Staten Island Railway is the same as the subway, and you can use an OMNY card, a credit card, (or whatever you use to get on the subway or bus) when you enter (or exit) the train at the St. George Ferry terminal.

For the drivers:
You can find parking near the New Dorp SIR station.
Taking the Staten Island Railway from Huguenot back to New Dorp is free.

There is no waitlist for this hike. All Shorewalkers who want to attend can attend. Please let us know when you sign up if you plan to drive.

If you are unable to attend after signing up, please remove your name from the list so we can know how many to expect.

BRING: Water, snack, lunch. Please make sure you have a snack that you can eat while you are walking. Poles are not needed.
Sneakers are okay.

More than light rain cancels.

Those ferry riders going back to the Staten Island Ferry from Huguenot can ride the Staten Island Railway (SIR) to St. George but have to pay (OMNY, credit card, or other method) when they are exiting the SIR at the ferry terminal. Using the same method of payment, you can transfer for free to a subway or bus in Manhattan.

On the day of the hike, please use phone or text message to contact either of us, if needed. If you send a message, please include your first name.
Leaders: Barbara Lanzara (917) 623-2589, Irv Reich (917) 913-2742.

Take the Great Saunter Fall Challenge. Register here to walk 32 miles in 16 days starting October 4. Registration is only $10, and Shorewalkers will donate all fees to the Carl Schurz Park Conservancy, the dedicated caretakers of the park’s beautiful gardens and lawns. This walk will count for 11 miles of your total. You do not have to participate in the Fall Challenge to join the walk—all members are welcome.
