Details

We will explore Staten Island’s 57-mile coastline. However, unlike the Shorewalker’s Great Saunter completed in one day, we will complete the Staten Island Saunter in 6 or so intervals. During this Fall Challenge, we will complete three sections, from the SI Ferry to the Conference House area in Tottenville.
On this third part, we will start at the Huguenot Railway station.
The Staten Island Railway (SIR) takes us back to the ferry terminal at St. George (or to Huguenot, for the drivers).
This third section is 10 miles on mostly flat terrain.
There is a portion of the hike on the shore, approximately 1000 + feet, that is a bit of an obstacle course with various sized rocks and debris washed up on the sand. You may feel that this hike is too challenging, but those who come will receive assistance if needed. (Both of us agree that this portion is doable.)
Note: if you came on our July 4 hike to the Conference House, this hike has some overlapping portions. We tried to spend less time on the beach. Also, we wanted to avoid the somewhat monotonous Hylan Blvd and make the walk more interesting and fun.
Closed shoes are needed.

MEET: At 9:00 AM outside the bathrooms on the 2nd floor of the Staten Island Ferry terminal in lower Manhattan. Please use the bathrooms in the ferry terminal on the Manhattan side. We will take the ferry leaving at 9:30 AM.
In Staten Island, we will take the Staten Island Railway to Huguenot. The fare is the same as the subway, and you can use an OMNY card, a credit card, (or whatever you use to get on the subway or bus) when you enter (or exit) the train at the St. George Ferry terminal. If you previously used your OMNY or credit card or phone to ride the subway, it is a free transfer to get on the Staten Island Railway.

For the drivers:
There is street parking around the Huguenot SIR station. You can park in Huguenot and then take the Staten Island Railway back to Huguenot from Tottenville. It is free to take the railway from Tottenville to Huguenot.

There is no waitlist for this hike. All Shorewalkers who want to attend can attend. Please let us know when you sign up if you plan to drive.

If you are unable to attend after signing up, please remove your name from the list so we can know how many to expect.

BRING: Water, snack, lunch. Please make sure you have a snack that you can eat while you are walking. Poles are not needed.
Sneakers are okay.

More than light rain cancels.

Those ferry riders going back to the Staten Island Ferry from Tottenville can ride the Staten Island Railway (SIR) to St. George but have to pay (OMNY, credit card, or other method) when they are exiting the SIR at the ferry terminal. Using the same method of payment, you can transfer for free to a subway or bus in Manhattan.

On the day of the hike, please use phone or text message to contact either of us, if needed. If you send a message, please include your first name.
Leaders: Barbara Lanzara (917) 623-2589, Irv Reich (917) 913-2742.

Take the Great Saunter Fall Challenge. Register here to walk 32 miles in 16 days starting October 4. Registration is only $10, and Shorewalkers will donate all fees to the Carl Schurz Park Conservancy, the dedicated caretakers of the park’s beautiful gardens and lawns. This walk will count for 10 miles of your total. You do not have to participate in the Fall Challenge to join the walk—all members are welcome.
